Through exposure to higher-level texts, students will expand their vocabulary, improve comprehension and retention skills, and develop stronger critical thinking abilities. Reading complex novels also encourages students to analyze sophisticated story structures, examine character development in greater depth, and explore universal themes such as courage, justice, identity, sacrifice, and perseverance. These experiences prepare students for the academic rigor of high school coursework while also helping them become more thoughtful and reflective readers.\r\n\r\nThe support of donors through DonorsChoose plays an important role in making these opportunities possible for classrooms. Funding for individual classroom projects allows teachers to provide students with engaging and meaningful novels that may not otherwise be available due to limited school resources. Because of donor generosity, like yours, my students will have access to a wider variety of classic literature that encourages academic growth, strengthens literacy skills, and fosters a lifelong appreciation for reading. These contributions directly impact student success by ensuring classrooms are equipped with the materials needed to challenge honors students, like mine, and help them continue growing as confident, capable learners.","fullyFundedDate":1778597081851,"projectUrl":"project/literary-legends-a-journey-through-the/10261303/","projectTitle":"Literary Legends: A Journey Through the Classics","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Roam","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2066247_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1600219709056","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-roam"},{"teacherId":2066247,"projectId":10186499,"letterContent":"This new set of books will help create lasting opportunities for future 8th grade students by encouraging stronger reading habits, deeper comprehension skills, and greater engagement with literature. With increased access to high-quality and high-interest books, my future students will have more opportunities to participate in collaborative reading activities, class discussions, and independent reading experiences. These resources will help students build confidence as readers while preparing them for the academic expectations of high school and beyond.\r\n\r\nThe addition of these titles will also allow more students in future school years to participate in the Battle of the Books competition. Because students will have greater access to the required titles, more participants will be able to commit to completing the reading necessary to qualify for the competition. Battle of the Books promotes important academic and personal growth by strengthening reading comprehension, improving retention of information, and motivating students through healthy competition. In addition, students learn to work collaboratively with peers while demonstrating consistency, responsibility, and commitment throughout the preparation process.\r\n\r\nIn the years ahead, these books will continue to support a positive reading culture within the classroom and school community. Future students will have opportunities to discover new interests, challenge themselves with diverse literature, and develop a lifelong appreciation for reading. The impact of these resources will extend beyond a single school year by helping students grow into thoughtful readers, effective collaborators, and motivated learners who are better prepared for future academic success.","fullyFundedDate":1778033385599,"projectUrl":"project/books-for-battle-bob/10186499/","projectTitle":"Books for Battle (B.O.B.)","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Roam","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2066247_orig.jpg?crop=2320,2320,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1600219709056","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/mrs-roam"},{"teacherId":9779429,"projectId":9718644,"letterContent":"Students were able to make connections to this year's content and expand on their knowledge. Students became geologists and archeologists. They understood the process of carefully working to uncover items buried in sand. They then had to research the items they found. They were able to identify what type of animal bone, dinosaur, seashell, and stone they dug up based on the bone structure and identifying marks. This was the same process for the stone, dinosaur, and shell. The students loved looking at the real skulls, stones, and shells. They were able to expand their understanding by making connections to current organisms and the bone structure of past ancestors. \r\n\r\nThe students then learned the process of how fossils are formed. We replicated this process using clay, plaster, and a plastic dinosaur or seashell. They were fascinated by how much detail can be transferred and how much of the object gets shown depending on placement and pressure. \r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful that the students learned so much and had a fun time in the process. I am also grateful for the donors who helped make this possible. Thank you so much for bringing these labs to life. I know this has made a lasting impression on the students and me. They allow us to teach key skills like analyzing theme, tracking character development, making inferences, and citing evidence—all in a format that feels accessible and motivating. Students also learn to interpret illustrations, understanding how visuals contribute to tone and meaning. This lowers barriers while maintaining rigor, helping more students successfully access complex texts.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is now active and collaborative. Students read independently and with partners, pausing to discuss, question, and annotate both text and images. Engagement has grown significantly—students who once hesitated now contribute ideas with confidence, while avid readers dig deeper by comparing versions and noticing nuances. There's a noticeable sense of excitement as students share recommendations and genuinely connect over stories.\r\n\r\nThese books have also inspired students to create their own graphic novels based on their narrative writing. They apply skills like pacing, dialogue, and characterization while making creative decisions about visuals and layout.
