I am fortunate that despite teaching a 3/4 combo class that my 3rd grade team is departmentalized and I have just my 4th grade students for Science and Social Studies. And having never taught 4th grade before I was feeling overwhelmed at the thought of having to piece together Science and Social Studies curriculum that was engaging and fun. But through your generosity of the gift cards, I bought a fun, engaging, and impactful Science curriculum that my students have been loving!\r\n\r\n The curriculum I purchased was from Give Spark and titled 4th Grade NGSS Science, full year of curiosity-driven units and plans. I have taught the entire unit of Earth's Systems, Processes that shape the Earth along with doing hands-on projects for many of the lessons. One of these lessons included Maps where we looked at physical maps and locations on Google Earth to see what we observed about landforms, regions, and and weather. The activity included in this lesson was to make salt dough from scratch and create a map of California. After creating the map and letting it dry, students painted California's four regions and added any landforms they wanted to create with their extra dough. This project reinforced my student's knowledge of landforms, CA regions, and how to read maps in general.\r\n\r\n Another lesson that was loved by my students was learning all about Earth's surfaces, tectonic plates and plate boundaries, and volcanoes. They learned the four layers of our Earth, the names of the Earth's systems, and what causes volcanic eruptions. For these lessons we did a couple of fun activities that the students loved including halving Graham Crackers to act as tectonic plates and moving them along shaving cream to create divergent, convergent, and transform boundaries. The students were using vocabulary related to the lesson and really got to see and experience how plates move. We also created a volcano out of play dough and used baking soda and vinegar to emulate a volcanic eruption. Students wanted to repeat this process several times to see if they could get their volcano have a bigger eruption each time. \r\n\r\n Another big hit was the Erosion and weathering lessons where students learned the vocabulary including weathering, erosion, and deposition. They were able to play with this concept by adding wet sand to a tin and creating a hill of some sort, then adding water to see the process of erosion and deposition clearly. \r\n\r\n Lastly, we ended our Earth's Systems unit with the rocks and minerals and fossils lessons. Students learned about the three types of rocks on our Earth and got to be rock detectives and use magnifying glasses to examine the characteristics of different rocks. Then then had to identify if it was an Igneous, Sedimentary, or Metamorphic rock. Students had fun looking at the different types of rocks and describing them in detail. And for our Fossil unit students got to investigate fossils from millions of years ago and learn about who studies fossils, the four types of fossils, and what we can learn from fossils. \r\n\r\n As you can see, having this Science curriculum has really been such a benefit to my 4th graders, and has allowed me to teach a subject that has hands-on projects to reinforce their learning. I wouldn't have been able to do all of this without your donation.
