Thanks to your kindness, my U.S. History students now have four Monopoly game boards, a powerful tool to explore the complex and often devastating history of redlining. When the games arrived, the students were curious and excited. After I explained how we'd modify the boards to represent real neighborhoods and historical developments, their enthusiasm was immediate and contagious. The most powerful part, however, came from their reflections after playing, where they were able to directly connect a game to a historical reality.\r\n\r\nYour contribution has helped transform abstract concepts into tangible, engaging learning experiences. By playing these modified Monopoly games, students were able to experience firsthand the systemic barriers that shaped American cities. For example, one student who started at a disadvantage noted how the game was \"sort of like watching a city fall, knowing you can do nothing about it,\" because their income and mobility were severely limited. Another student who started with significant wealth said that \"Monopoly isn't really a game about working hard,\" recognizing that their success was determined by their starting position, not just their effort. These powerful student insights are a testament to the effectiveness of this project and the profound impact of your donation.\r\n\r\nThis hands-on approach has opened a door to meaningful dialogue and transformative learning. Your belief in our students' potential has not only provided materials but has empowered them to become informed and active citizens. On behalf of my students and myself, thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your commitment to education and your investment in their future.","fullyFundedDate":1743515473613,"projectUrl":"project/mid-twentieth-century-red-lining-project/9217009/","projectTitle":"Mid-Twentieth Century Red Lining Project","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Gibson","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9788335"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_43153","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":698,"numTeachers":44,"percentFrplEligible":58,"percentAsian":43,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":19,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":15,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"15.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":58.7,"schoolId":43153,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dr Ronald McNair Academic High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dr Ronald McNair Academic High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/new-jersey/jersey-city-public-school-district/dr-ronald-mcnair-academic-high-school/43153"}
