Before this donation, these students were not getting appropriately challenged because I did not have the proper texts to challenge them with reading and comprehension opportunities. \r\n\r\nWith these texts, I was able to start the year with two literature circle groups for students who tested out of third grade intervention. We began the year with reading Matilda and I Survived: The Chicago Fire. Both groups loved discussing the comprehension questions, the relationship between Matilda and her parents, comparing the events in the story and researching the Chicago Fire, and building their fluency. Within the last week, we have added four other literature circles for students to participate in. We now have over half the third grade reading chapter books which helps build their fluency, comprehension, and academic vocabulary. The students cheered when I told them we are going to start reading chapter books! Thank you so much for the books that are bringing my students so much joy!","fullyFundedDate":1741808314874,"projectUrl":"project/flying-off-the-bookshelf/8957386/","projectTitle":"Flying Off the Bookshelf!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Hamilton","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7881662"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_67855","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":634,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":12,"percentBlack":52,"percentWhite":3,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 8","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":51.7,"schoolId":67855,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Kansas City International Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Kansas City International Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/missouri-department-of-education/della-lamb-elementary-school/67855"}
