Flexible seating allows students to make their own choices that will best aid their learning. My students are able to pick which seat they want to sit at for each day and can pick different seats everyday. This allows students to sit where they are the most comfortable and will be the most successful. In our classroom right now, students can pick from standard 4 legged chairs, a comfy couch, rocking chairs, and a lot of floor space! These options have been great but there is one problem with all of them: they do not allow movement. I have observed how powerful wobble chairs and mats for the chairs that allow students to move can be!
There are fewer disruptions and more incredible work being done in the classroom when students have freedom the to constructively move their bodies. This year our school, like many others, face the challenge of students learning in person this year that were taught virtually last year. For a first-grade teacher, this means some of my students have never been in a classroom setting before. With this project, I want my students to know that every student is welcomed and supported in my classroom. I believe that flexible seating is yet another way to reinforce this to students because they get to make choices, and there is a wide variety to fit all learners.
