When we handed them out, we had students lined up that were so excited to get a free coat. Many of the students shared that they had outgrown their previous coats are were unable to purchase new ones. They were able to shred the threadbare hoodies and blankets they would wrap around themselves in place of a coat for an item that will actually keep them warm. I saw students wearing these coats all around the building for weeks to come. We had several left over, but we were able to share these with the district's homeless liaison to distribute next year to students in need. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your support in keeping our students warm. One moment was when a student shared how Amal's story reminded them of a family member's experience with the legal system. This led to a heartfelt conversation about fairness and how these issues affect our own communities.\r\nRight now, my students are working on writing poetry that reflects Amal's story. They hated reading (for many different reasons), and the thought of having to do it for 10 minutes DAILY scared them. However, I introduced them to a variety of novels at the start of the school year. Many found one or two that they were interested in. After a couple of months of pushing, it clicked! The ones who found a love for reading were asking me for another recommendation after they had finished their first book, or they wanted the second novel in the series they were reading.\r\n\r\nSo because of this, I thank you for contributing to my classroom library.
