I teach high school seniors British literature. My school is in a high poverty area. Many of my students will receive their only meal at school and also have to work full time to support their families. Graduating high school is extremely difficult for them with all of life's stresses already on them. Furthering their education may be their only way to escape the cycle of poverty they have found themselves in. This makes many of the ideas presented in British Literature foreign to them. With each unit covered, they learn that there is a world outside of the poverty they have been raised in. Learning how to read more difficult literature prepares their minds for college and gives them a better chance of succeeding.
