I try to build a classroom with authors, characters, and subjects that reflect our community. Kids deserve to see people who reflect the many cultures in our community in places of leadership, in books, in stories, and being successful. I want to build a classroom where kids see people who look like them being successful. Classrooms full of culture and community. Characters who are every shade of the rainbow.
I am requesting books by African American authors telling stories about people of color to fill our bookshelves. I teach American Literature and Reading for Pleasure. We need classrooms that have more than just white authors and lead characters. We need books with strong people of color characters.
Our students need new books to challenge them to learn when learning is such a hard struggle post-Covid. Many of our students are not used to the rigor of learning due to the difference in education since the pandemic started. They need content they are excited about. We need role models and examples of strong people to help drive their desire to read and learn. By providing characters who are similar to our students it will be much easier to help them love reading and learning
