When the chairs arrived, students were cheering, smiling, and even hugging the Big Joe chairs. It was such a fun and rewarding moment to see how excited they were about having a space that feels welcoming, comfortable, and designed with them in mind. The new lighting and seating have transformed part of our classroom into a calm environment where students feel more relaxed, focused, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWhat started as a reading area has quickly become a favorite space for students to engage in weekly tutorials, collaborate with peers, and reflect on their learning in a new way. We have noticed students using the space not only for reading, but also for meaningful conversations, small group work, and independent learning. The lighting has also helped teachers create a smoother classroom routine by making transitions easier and saving valuable instructional time throughout the day.\r\n\r\nAs we close the school year, we plan to expand how students use the space for next year such as during tutorials, goal-setting activities, and collaborative projects. Our hope is that students continue to see the classroom as a place where they feel supported, comfortable, and excited to engage in learning each day. We are incredibly grateful for the support that helped make this possible for our students.","fullyFundedDate":1771086983548,"projectUrl":"project/light-the-way-creating-a-space-to-thriv/9962075/","projectTitle":"Light the Way: Creating a Space to Thrive","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Moore","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10386020"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_76509","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":2008,"numTeachers":113,"percentFrplEligible":50,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":19,"percentWhite":59,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":7,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":9,"gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":56.9,"schoolId":76509,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about David H Hickman High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"David H Hickman High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/columbia-school-district-93/david-h-hickman-high-school/76509"}
