It allowed me to teach my students about the Holocaust in a meaningful and accessible way that sparked their interest. They were all eager to read the books, some even reading ahead in their books and asking to read the other books when they finished early. \r\n\r\nFor this unit, we did a preview before reading the books, where students received background knowledge about the Holocaust in order to help give them some context as to what they would be reading. Throughout the unit, we also read non-fiction articles to build additional background knowledge and understanding. As students read their books, they focused on skills such as inferencing, character traits, conflict, and theme. Additionally, they had group discussions twice a week about the book and how it connected to their knowledge about history and the present. \r\n\r\nIt was wonderful to see students making connections between the books and actual history, or better yet, books and current events. The empathy many of my students exhibited as they read and discussed these books was truly astounding. For some, this was the first time that they had learned about this period in history, and reading these books allowed them to dive into this historical event and explore it. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for helping bring these books to my students. The lessons they gained from them are truly invaluable.","fullyFundedDate":1772546752018,"projectUrl":"project/tackling-issues-of-the-past-and-present/10076836/","projectTitle":"Tackling Issues of the Past and Present Through Novel Studies","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Espinoza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp3746705_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1593990079883","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/3746705"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_4997","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":850,"numTeachers":41,"percentFrplEligible":16,"percentAsian":34,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":33,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":22,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":0,"percentMultiracialImputed":8,"gradesServed":"6 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"20.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":88.5,"schoolId":4997,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Dartmouth Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Dartmouth Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/union-school-district/dartmouth-middle-school/4997"}
