With the uncertainty of what the next year will bring, I will have to shift many of my lesson plans, and opportunities to dive deep into big discussions about the books we read as a class may be limited. I want to be sure that despite those obstacles, I am able to provide diverse texts to my students where they can not only see themselves in the characters they read about, but also take in the perspectives of their characters and greater develop their understanding and empathy towards people of a variety of backgrounds. The books listed will help me update and diversify my classroom library, and the larger quantities of books will allow me to conduct book studies with my students so that we can dive deeper into some of the texts. It is my goal to help my students find new authors and stories of interest and for them to conduct perspective-taking of various characters so that they can have a better understanding that there is no "single story," characters can be nuanced and diverse and don't always provide the narrative we expect them to.
