The availability of full young adult series has helped students move beyond isolated reading experiences and into patterns of frequent, self-directed reading. When students are able to stay within a series, they read more consistently, build stamina, and deepen comprehension as they follow characters and themes across multiple texts. This kind of sustained engagement supports vocabulary development and prepares students for the more demanding texts they will encounter in high school.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom now looks like choice paired with conversation. Students read independently, but they also talk with one another about what they are reading, recommend books to peers, and check in about where they are in a story. The series books have been especially impactful for students who previously struggled to finish a single book. Many of these students are now moving from one title to the next, motivated by curiosity rather than compliance, and developing confidence as readers along the way.\r\n\r\nThe class set of The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian will also created opportunities for shared learning that will extend into future school years. Reading this novel together in future school years will allow students to practice close reading while engaging with themes of identity, culture, and belonging through a critical lens.","fullyFundedDate":1761963746375,"projectUrl":"project/from-page-turners-to-lifelong-learner/9756337/","projectTitle":"From Page-Turners to Lifelong Learner","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Kern","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10277875_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1758719668280","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10277875"},{"teacherId":4226767,"projectId":9683183,"letterContent":"Happy New Year! It always helps when the activities are fun and the robots and licenses that we received promote something special--learning MatheBotics! \r\n\r\nAlthough the Power of Problem-Solving (POP) Intervention class is a semester-long course, ALL of the students wanted to stay for the second semester because they had so much fun programing and learning math in a different way. It is currently an independent station activity. I am thankful for a tactile way for the students to continue to engage with the new vocabulary they have learned so far this school year. I really wanted the children to go beyond just learning the vocabulary for the test. The commitment the students have made to their books is wonderful to see. Some students have chosen to illustrate their books with their own drawings. However, the majority use the stencils provided in the Keep it Running Project to illustrate. Everyone can confidently participate.\r\n\r\nThe paper and ink provided has allowed us to print their writing portfolios. Again their writing is not just a forgotten assignment. It is a tangible packet of their work that they have produced. Before these Writing Portfolios are ready to publish editing is necessary. That is at least two times the students will have to print. The supplies provided in the Keep it Running Project made this possible. \r\n\r\nTo have the supplies to allow the students to creatively present their work is a gift that they can keep. Many times this stops in elementary school. I am grateful for the opportunity these students have to create books and portfolios that will be on display at Open House. They can proudly share with family and friends their accomplishments and hold on to them as memories to share or enjoy later.","fullyFundedDate":1763594321377,"projectUrl":"project/keep-it-running/9749196/","projectTitle":"Keep it Running","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Allen","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp1772473_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1505244130094","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/grateful-appreciative-"},{"teacherId":1772473,"projectId":9526421,"letterContent":"Having papergoods on hand is a plus in a busy classroom. Instead of just reading about weather patterns, students can track storms, compare temperatures in different regions, and analyze real-world climate trends. This has helped them make connections between what we learn in class and the world around them, deepening their understanding of weather systems and their impact on daily life.\r\n\r\nThe students are especially excited to explore global weather patterns, using interactive maps and satellite images to see how weather changes across different regions.
