Of course, most exciting was watching the lady bug larvae and caterpillars develop over time. Students enjoyed seeing their changes and growth every morning and recording their observations in their change journals. Once the ladybugs and butterflies had grown into their adult stages, students celebrated their lives by releasing them in our garden with cheers of delight. The magnetic and plastic models of different life cycles allowed for students to see and discuss similarities and differences among the insects. Their excitement and depth of understanding using these materials was evident throughout the unit. Students have been using the math manipulatives to add and subtract. The giant number lines were so much fun as they jumped to add and subtract. It made learning fun. Now that they have the hang of it, they use dry erase markers to jump forward and backward on the number line. They love solving problems because of these materials.
