Usually, when I start a Second grade class, most of the students know how to read in their native language, Spanish, and we work on mastering their reading skills in Spanish to later in the school year start reading in English. This is how an early exit bilingual classroom works. This year most of my students are Emergent readers, which means that their reading levels are well below average and will require more support and intervention to become better readers. As part of this situation, I’m faced with the challenge of not having enough Spanish level books to help them engage in the reading and acquire the necessary skills to be successful in this school year. For bilingual students, it’s very important to learn how to read in their native language and later transfer those skills to a second language. That’s why I need your help!
