The P wave or primary wave of an earthquake is a push pull, compression type of wave. Two students use a slinky and get about 6 to 8 feet apart. They gather the coils and push them towards their partner. They can see the movement like a domino effect if you will. For the S wave the students move the slinky side to side; the S wave moves perpendicular to each other. What a perfect way to see seismic waves. \r\n\r\nYou can imagine though students get real exuberant with this activity. That is why I decided to order plastic, more tangle-proof coils. We've tried off brand coils but nothing works the same as a slinky. Thank you for making this activity possible.\r\n\r\nAdditionally, I ordered some magnets. We learned a lot about pheromones. \r\n\r\nI followed up the lab with an opportunity to draw their specimens, label them, and find out that while they are helpful in the forest, removing all the deadwood and fallen trees, they are massively destructive in our homes and buildings. As reported by Orkin.com, did you know that termites cause over $5 billion in property damage annually in the United States, affecting approximately 600,000 homes each year. These pests often cause structural damage that is not covered by standard homeowner insurance policies, with average repair and treatment costs exceeding $3,000 per, and sometimes reaching over $8,000 per incident.\r\n\r\nAll made possible by our classroom partnership with you, DonorsChoose! As you know from my essay, I was lucky enough to have three classes of marine science. However, that put a strain on my resources and I had to write a new project to procure extra specimens. The project quickly funded, and the specimens also arrived in an extremely fast manner. \r\n\r\nMy students were intrigued by the starfish. Not only does the specimen help with dissection, but it also helps with information about that basic phylum- the echinoderms. We learned that starfish specifically has an oral and an aboral side. Exhibiting radio symmetry, there is an Exhibiting radio symmetry, there is an eye spot at the end of each ray. They could not believe that most of the starfish consisted of digestive gland. They enjoyed tracing the water vascular system from the mad repo rite to the tube feet! Overall, it was an awesome experience.\r\n\r\nThe dog fish was obviously more complex, but extremely important because it also mirrored some of the very anatomy that we have! The largest organ in the dogfish is the liver, the same as us. We were able to discern males from females, looking for claspers on the male. Students cut into the stomach and removed the contents of it. They also removed the contents of the intestines. They were pretty grossed out by thinking they were playing in dogfish poop. \r\n\r\nThese are just a few examples of some of the things that we learned today all because of you.\r\n\r\nAll in all these two activities are quite educational as well as fun.
