As a speech-language therapist, I work with students who have a variety of communication needs, and having access to new resources has helped me create more engaging, interactive, and meaningful learning experiences. These materials have encouraged my students to participate more actively in therapy, practice important speech and language skills, and build confidence in their ability to communicate.\r\n\r\nMy younger students have benefited from opportunities to develop early language skills, expand their vocabulary, strengthen their listening and comprehension skills, and practice expressing their wants, needs, and ideas. My elementary students have been able to use these resources to work on articulation, expressive and receptive language, social communication, and other skills that support their success in the classroom and beyond.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these resources have helped make speech therapy fun, motivating, and accessible for students with diverse learning needs. Seeing students become more confident, engaged, and willing to communicate has been incredibly rewarding. Your generosity has made a real difference in our speech room by providing resources that support learning, encourage communication, and help our students reach their fullest potential. Once the room was up and running, I brought two of my students with autism inside and had them pick a color for the lights. They were so excited about how the lights could change color and agreed that blue was the most calming and made sense with the underwater sea theme. \r\n\r\nAs more of my students checked out the space, they were wide-eyed with smiles on their faces. Some children immediately took interest in the sea creature stickers, some went to the sequence square on the back of the door, and some tested out the bean bag and weighted blanket under the blue lights listening to calming sounds of the ocean coming from the sound machine. \r\n\r\nThe room has provided a calm space for students (diagnosed with autism, ADHD, or Emotional Disturbance) to just take a quick break during their work cycles. After the break, they were able to re-enter their classrooms and continue on their learning journey. Additionally, this space has offered a place for dysregulated students to utilize in order to regulate and control themselves emotionally and behaviorally. Last week, a student with autism became so dysregulated and angry in class, that he was brought to the calming space. Here, he lay on the beanbag and covered his body with the weighted blanket. Watching the projected lights on the ceiling as well as listening to the calming sounds of the ocean, he was able to take the time he needed to bring himself down to a regulated state. From there, he was in a mindset to process with a staff member about what happened and then later transition back to his classroom routine. \r\n\r\nAgain, the transformation of the laundry room space into a relaxing area has significantly helped those who desperately needed it. We are extremely appreciative of your generosity that helped to make this project happen!","fullyFundedDate":1763648912081,"projectUrl":"project/keep-calm-and-carry-on/9896501/","projectTitle":"Keep Calm and Carry On","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Smith","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5284215_orig.jpg?crop=3024,3024,x0,y141&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1657731799745","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5284215"},{"teacherId":9689907,"projectId":9598530,"letterContent":"I have been using these resources to help students make connections between physical movement and their anatomy during my lessons. Specifically, when teaching fitness lessons I am able to have students identify muscles and bones engaged during certain exercise or movements. This has been a game changer for my kiddos, many of whom are identified with specials needs or as a multi-language learners. \r\n\r\nMy students were instantly interested in getting a closer look at the models and immediately starting becoming curious and asking questions about all the different bones of the body. One student even asked about the tail-bone, and I was able to explain we have a tail-bone because millions of years ago, humans used to have tails! \r\n\r\nMy next steps are to continue teaching specifics about the human body as we are learning about motor patterns and skills related to exercise and sports. On days where I am running a stations lesson, I plan to use the model at a station to have students analyze the figures and further investigate bones and muscles more closely. My students also love when I dress the skeleton up for holidays and special themes! I also am currently having a contest where students vote for what to name our class skeleton. So far the names to choose between are: Skelly, Lil Tim-bob, Lil Timmy, and Sammy.
