With the donated supplies, we were able to do multiple chemistry experiments with our unit. Students were able to experience chemical reactions instead of just hearing or reading about them. Students felt an endothermic reaction when baking soda and vinegar were mixed. When the two chemicals were mixed, a balloon was filled up with the gas carbon dioxide. Students were very impressed that the balloon that filled up was cool to the touch since most assume chemical reactions end in explosions. \r\nWe were also able to make elephant toothpaste, which creates an exothermic reaction. Using latex gloves, students were able to feel how warm the foam got after the reaction happened. \r\nStudents do so much better learning chemistry when they get to experience it first hand. The supplies went to both 7th and 8th grade, boys and girls soccer. They are helping our defensive lines, midfield players, and strikers all practice different skills and techniques and have even allowed our goalies to get some extra practice in different ways and areas. Without your donation we would be using older cheaper balls that were worn-out and would automatically curve when kicking them, we would still be using student backpacks as cones, and we would be forced to rely on the same drills that we had been using for years because we did not have the supplies to run some more advanced drills. With access to their own textbooks and paper to work through problems, students are doing more than just solving equations—they are learning to think, explain, and justify their ideas.\r\n\r\nEach day, students dive into math tasks that challenge them to make sense of numbers, patterns, and real-world situations. But the real growth comes when they pick up their pencils and begin to show their thinking on paper. This is where learning becomes visible.\r\n\r\nStudents use the paper to write claims—their mathematical answers or conclusions. Then, they back up those claims with evidence from the textbook or the problem itself. Most importantly, they add their reasoning—explaining why their thinking makes sense and how they arrived at their solution. This process strengthens both their math skills and their ability to communicate clearly.\r\n\r\nInstead of simply circling answers, students now draw models, write equations, and explain their steps. They are becoming more confident in showing what they know and why it works. This not only helps them deepen their understanding, but also allows us as teachers to give more targeted support.\r\n\r\nThe textbooks provide consistent, high-quality problems that are aligned to the standards. The paper gives students the space to wrestle with those problems, reflect on mistakes, and grow as learners. Together, they form a powerful toolset for student success.\r\n\r\nThanks to these resources, our students are becoming true mathematical thinkers. They are learning that math is not just about the right answer—it's about how you get there, and how you explain it.","fullyFundedDate":1739373543054,"projectUrl":"project/working-through-the-books/8939989/","projectTitle":"Working Through the Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Martinez","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9163474"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_42916","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":558,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":79,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":7,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":86,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"16.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_SMALL"},"inStateSupporters":66.9,"schoolId":42916,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Crane Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Crane Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/arizona/crane-elementary-school-district/crane-middle-school/42916"}
