Where will we get water from?\r\n\r\nFor our older students in 2nd through 5th grade, this project became an engaging lesson in both engineering and financial literacy. Each student was given a strict budget of $4 to \"purchase\" their design supplies and had to track their spending carefully on their spending sheet. It was amazing to watch them make thoughtful trade-offs, calculating whether spending extra money on sturdy tape or lightweight foam would give their sailboat the winning edge. The next week, for 2nd- 5th was building after design. Meanwhile, our Kindergarten and 1st-grade sailors dove straight into designing their \"velero,\" then into construction.\r\n\r\nOne unforgettable moment happened during trials. A 3rd grader realized her paper sail was too tall, and it got knocked over. Instead of giving up, she cut off a piece of her straw and her sail and successfully raced her boat down the raceway to cheers from her classmates. You didn't just donate a raceway; you sparked creativity, critical thinking, and a love for STEAM that my students will carry with them for years to come.
