These books have given my students the opportunity to learn about the lives, accomplishments, struggles, and lasting impact of remarkable African Americans through engaging biographies written specifically for young readers. Instead of simply reading about historical figures in a textbook, each student became the \"expert\" on one person. As they read, students took copious notes, identified important details, and practiced determining which information was most significant. They then used their research to create a riddle about their historical figure and a sculpture representing the person they studied. This project helped students practice reading comprehension, research, summarizing, writing, and creative thinking while making history personal and memorable.\r\n\r\nWhat I have loved most is seeing students become genuinely curious about the people behind the names in history. Reading in my classroom is much more than completing pages—it is a chance for students to discover something new, ask questions, make connections, and share what they have learned with others. Students who may not always consider themselves \"readers\" have especially enjoyed having a biography that feels like their own area of expertise. They are excited to share clues from their riddles and see if their classmates can guess their historical figure. These books have helped my students understand that Black history is not just a collection of dates and events; it is filled with courageous, creative, determined people whose contributions continue to shape our world. We created some wonderful self-portraits on canvas and the students were able to precisely control the amount of paint they used, learned how to blend colors and learned how to create shadows and highlights for dimensional effects. The skin tones are usually the colors they have the hardest time making, but not now!\r\n\r\nThe art club students were the first to use the paint markers and they were ecstatic. Some of our students had never used this type of paint marker before and many of the younger students had never painted with acrylic. Meanwhile, the kiddos that had used POSCA UNI markers at home or in class last year, started raving about how good they were and how they were so easy to use and would paint on almost any surface. \r\n\r\nWhile our 5th graders will be leaving us this June to go to middle school, the 3rd and 4th graders will continue to use the markers. The 3rd graders already started small canvases with Britto style pictures. The warm skin tones are an amazing addition to our Primary color markers. We hope to get more markers for future projects (and to replace the current ones as they run out!)
