When I first introduced the Chompsaw to the class, they weren't sure what it was but they could tell it was special: it looked like a real tool, not a toy version of something. I modeled cutting a few things and could see that they were ready to start exploring and experimenting on their own. \r\n\r\nWe started off with a \"magnificent thing\" project where they were asked to identify a need in the classroom and make something to fit that need. It was so exciting to see them get to expand their possibilities without being limited by materials that are normally too difficult for them to cut! They made \"feelings puppets\" out of felt for when they need to talk to someone and a wide variety of custom boxes. \r\n\r\nSoon, we will celebrate the end of our science unit on animal defenses by giving them the chance to design their own spikes, shells, or shield structure for an animal. In addition to that, students earn table points. Each week, there is a \"bigger\" box for the winning table to go to.
