When I first introduced the Chompsaw to the class, they weren't sure what it was but they could tell it was special: it looked like a real tool, not a toy version of something. I modeled cutting a few things and could see that they were ready to start exploring and experimenting on their own. \r\n\r\nWe started off with a \"magnificent thing\" project where they were asked to identify a need in the classroom and make something to fit that need. It was so exciting to see them get to expand their possibilities without being limited by materials that are normally too difficult for them to cut! They made \"feelings puppets\" out of felt for when they need to talk to someone and a wide variety of custom boxes. \r\n\r\nSoon, we will celebrate the end of our science unit on animal defenses by giving them the chance to design their own spikes, shells, or shield structure for an animal. Each student in our middle school (6th, 7th and 8th grade) all received individual packs of the hygiene products that were purchased with your donation. \r\n\r\nIn each packet, students received deodorant, bars of soap, mints and inspirational message cards. They were all thrilled and thankful. Each week, individual points are earned. If a week is a five day week, students must earn 50 by Friday to visit and to pick a prize from the prize box. In addition to that, students earn table points. Each week, there is a \"bigger\" box for the winning table to go to. The students work extremely hard to earn these points and the competition builds support for each other.\r\nThe students also love the reading strips that help them read straight across a page.
