And our October issues have arrived safe and sound. I have had 2 weeks with my new class of 23 kindergarteners and they are eager and ready to explore everything! Many of my students did not attend preschool, and half of my students are learning English as their second language. Our school is focusing on Reading growth this year, and Let's Find Out and Science Spin are a great, authentic supplement to our reading curriculum! \r\n\r\nThe September issue we completed about Making New Friends included a read-along with social practice, like smiling to someone in your class, paying a compliment, or waving to say hello! This issue also included a vocabulary word: \"distracting,\" and not only did we learn it, we apply it to our classroom and continue using it in sentences every day about why we have rules at school! There was also a video, a dance brain break (so important in Kindergarten), and a game we played that matched capital and lowercase letters! Today was a great way to teach our kiddos about Earth Day, most of them have never heard about it. I explained to them that Earth day will always be on April 22nd, and the next time they get to hear about it they will be in first grade. Scholastic lets find out is a great way for kids to learn, engage, read, explore, and make connections to real world events. We watched the scholastic learning videos, read the magazine, played the brain break/earth day brain break, game, and even made earth day hats that went along with the magazine. I love using scholastic to help all kids learn and TPT has been a great resource to find extensions, crafts, and more useful learning tools to use in the classroom. We are loving our new hands-on toys that make learning to read more developmentally appropriate and FUN. Even my amazing paraeducators are excited to be engaging the students in something other than worksheets required by the curriculum! \r\n\r\nThese toys will be used by many kindergarteners for years to come as these kinds of activities will ALWAYS be relevant with 5-6 year olds!
