While most families are happy to send in a spare outfit, I always feel terrible for the students who don't have one available when they need it most. In the past, I could usually scrounge up an extra shirt or pair of pants, but spare underwear was always a challenge. I hate having to offer a child a pull-up or suggest going commando just to get through the day.\r\nNow, thanks to your incredible generosity, I don't have to worry about that anymore. Having a backpack of their own gives them a special place to keep school materials, extra clothing, and items they may need throughout the day. We are in Michigan where our weather is ever changing, and it got hot at the end of the year. Our air conditioning unit worked 3-4 days a week max, and our classroom was humid. Thanks to your support, we changed the humidity level in our classroom which in turned changed the temperature. Once we put in the new dehumidifier, we were dumping out the water at least twice a day but our humidity was staying below 50%. The students were pretending to be parents, grandparents, and more. Well for babies to survive, they must eat. We decided to remove the kitchen materials which were odds and ends with not enough supplies and replace it with the new stuff. My students LOVED to pretend to set the table and feed the babies. They immediately noticed all the supplies they needed to set a table were now found in the kitchen. When it was clean up time, they were easily able to put the materials away quickly. Additionally, the sizes were perfect for the area. \r\nOur dramatic play area became a huge success at the end of the year thanks to your support. Students were playing with each other and building life skills. I knew how important this project would be for my students and their families. It took me about two hours to sort the food, so it can be sent home after we got back from break.\r\n\r\nI know the families were overwhelmed just as much as I was. They received breakfast items of cereal and oatmeal which will make for a quick healthy breakfast before we start our morning. With a full belly, the students can stay focused on what is being taught as they continue to learn without the rumbling of their stomach. We have worked on helping the students understand their actions affect not only themselves but others. If you leave a child out during play, you may feel good and happy, but the other child feels alone and sad. The left out child may begin to build a fear that no one wants to play with them or be around them. These books help the students begin to understand and see both sides. They also teach other ways to address the situation - such as asking the child if they could play later with them. \r\nThese books will be a game changer for the whole school. The students LOVED the new toys. They had a blast building Hot Wheels tracks and seeing how far the cars could go. We have moved on to the buildings unit and the roads magna-tiles remain a big hit. Students love building cities with the roads to drive around. \r\n\r\nThe STEM kit with the cars and ramps really got the students thinking. They talked about how the cars went different speeds down the ramp. They explored what made them go faster. They build towers with the blocks and watch the cars crash learning about cause and effect. \r\n\r\nAll of these materials really got our students talking and thinking about roads. Throughout this school year, we have made at least one class book a month - usually two or more. Trying to figure out how to display the books for the students becomes difficult. If I use a folder, I have to use page protectors. If I use binding rings, the students have to not play with them to prevent them from being pulled apart. \r\n\r\nAlready with this new binding machine, I have made and bounded four class books. Additionally, I have made several supplemental materials to support teaching science and to help assess my students. This machine is already helping our classroom stay organized. I have also noticed, the students are enjoying reading the book they have created themselves. Each child has their own \"shelf\"/bin to store their extra clothes in which allows them to keep it discrete from peer's eyes. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, with the dresser, I was able to store extra clothes, underwear, and socks in the classroom. They are sorted according to gender and size. This has sped up finding clothes for students when they do not have any from home. Also, other teachers have come into my classroom to see if they could have some clothes for their students. Poor dental hygiene can also lead to cavities, bad breath, and other serious health problem.\r\n\r\nEvery day at school, my students brush their teeth for two whole minutes, and we talk about making sure to use the toothpaste and how important it is to hit all of the teeth in their mouth (not just the front teeth).
