All high school students have the opportunity to check out pencils throughout the day to use in any of their classes. The stop by, add their name to the checkout list, and grab one. The pencils are magnetic, so I was able to take an old cookie sheet that was not usable for baking any longer and create a checkout/storage board for the pencils. The kids do a wonderful job of helping make sure all pencils are returned during Trojan Time each day, and assist me with making sure the pencils that need recharged get plugged in. My students are engaged and have created some wonderful graphs using the motion sensors. Learning first about the basics of X-T and V-T graphs, and then being able to create live graphs was key to brining the learning front and center. There was no concern about being off task on days we had the motion sensors out for class. The students were very careful with the new lab equipment, listening intently and then following directions carefully when allowed to start the lab. Our students have grown up on technology their entire lives, so I have actually thoroughly enjoyed learning new tasks with the vernier probes with the kiddos. The students in my high school science classes have really taken ownership of their learning through their notebooks. By request, we have started getting a larger notebook for their freshmen Physics First class and they add to it in Biology. The kids take the notebooks at the end of their sophomore year and they have a valuable resource to use later on. In Biology II, the anatomy/physiology notebooks have become a hit for students to take and use in college. While they don't have to do the memorization yet, it is a valuable tool to help them with learning important facts that will be vital for their future careers. Everyone having the same opportunities with resources makes the classes low stress, and more engaging!
