The students really enjoyed the story and for many it was their first experience with a true fantasy book. We read through it at the end of the school year and it was the perfect book to wind down their 7th grade experience. I am looking forward to doing a much more extensive unit with the book during the second quarter of this year and my new students are already excited and looking forward to it. The Hobbit is my favorite book of all time and I love being able to revisit it time and time again, share it with my students and use it as a vehicle to teach English concepts. Thank you again for helping me bring this story to my students last year, the current class, and the classes that I will have in the future!","fullyFundedDate":1740698663946,"projectUrl":"project/goin-on-an-adventure-with-bilbo-and-com/9055553/","projectTitle":"Goin' on an Adventure with Bilbo and Company!","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Soza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp574191_orig.jpg?crop=820,820,x104,y146&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1640021265522","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/574191"},{"teacherId":574191,"projectId":8942827,"letterContent":"I want to say thank you again to all of you for donating to my Treasure Island unit. The book is a lot of fun and the students are really getting into to it now that Jim (the protagonist) and crew have set sail. \r\n\r\nI decided to try something new in regard to the ELA concepts that I wanted to teach in this unit. Instead of the traditional quizzes and question/answer assignments, I am having the students create comic strips following the plot of the story. However, within the comic strips, students are required to embed ELA concepts such as tropes, motif, vocabulary, exposition, rising action, characterization, etc. What I have really enjoyed about this process is that students have to think critically about how they incorporate these English concepts within their art work. Even more, it's fun watching how the different groups exercise their creativity towards this end; no two strips are the same. It really is pushing their brains to bring all the topics together in comic form.\r\n\r\nThis is my first time teaching this novel and I already have ideas about how to improve the unit moving forward, making this a fun teacher-activity for me as well. I'm uploading a few pictures of the work we have completed so far, including posters identifying pirate tropes and some examples of the comic strips. Before the unit is done, we are also going to have a \"Dress like a Pirate\" day. Everyone is excited for that. I'll make sure to post some shots when we do that.","fullyFundedDate":1735260830524,"projectUrl":"project/set-sail-for-treasure-island/8942827/","projectTitle":"Set Sail For Treasure Island","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Soza","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp574191_orig.jpg?crop=820,820,x104,y146&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1640021265522","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/574191"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_106302","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":202,"numTeachers":9,"percentFrplEligible":38,"percentAsian":62,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":30,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 8","studentTeacherRatio":"22.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":75.8,"schoolId":106302,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about College Connection Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"College Connection Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/franklin-mckinley-school-district/college-connection-academy/106302"}
