What may seem like a simple supply, dry-erase markers, has made a powerful difference in how learning looks and feels in our classroom.\r\n\r\n From the very first day we introduced the markers, student engagement immediately increased. Instead of passively writing in notebooks, students now actively solve problems on whiteboards, respond to reading questions in real time, and revise their thinking without fear of making mistakes. During a recent lesson focused on citing textual evidence, students worked in small groups to answer a question, write their claim on their boards, and then underline the exact evidence from the text to support it. When it was time to share, every student had an answer ready. The boards created accountability, participation, and confidence.\r\n\r\n When the students first saw the new markers, their excitement was genuine. Several students said, \"Are these ours?\" and immediately began brainstorming ways to use them during math and reading. What stood out most was their eagerness to participate. Students who sometimes hesitate to raise their hands were far more willing to write their responses on a board and hold it up. The ability to erase and try again removed some of the pressure and encouraged risk-taking in learning. These materials have strengthened our daily instruction. We use them for quick formative checks, vocabulary practice, math problem-solving, and small-group reteach sessions. They allow me to quickly assess understanding, adjust instruction in the moment, and ensure that all students are engaged, not just a few volunteers.\r\n\r\n As we move forward, the next steps include using the boards to support our preparation for the upcoming assessment. Students will practice unpacking test questions, solving multi-step problems, and annotating short text excerpts before committing their answers to paper. We are also incorporating collaborative review stations where students rotate, respond, and build on one another's thinking using their boards. Your support has helped create a classroom culture where participation is visible, and every student has a voice. In our Delta community, resources matter. Because of you, our students are experiencing hands-on, active learning that builds both skill and confidence.","fullyFundedDate":1767053566504,"projectUrl":"project/targeting-success-hands-on-learning-in/9764242/","projectTitle":"Targeting Success: Hands-On Learning in the Delta","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Crowell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1216989_orig.png?crop=42,42,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729798660573","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/www-donorschoose-org-scrowell"},{"teacherId":8651163,"projectId":10097540,"letterContent":"Well, well, well, this is such a wonderful gift for scholars that enjoys reading. Because of your generosity, my students now have access to rich, meaningful texts that are helping them grow not only as readers, but as thinkers and future leaders. These new books allow us to explicitly teach skills such as identifying central ideas, citing textual evidence, analyzing character perspectives, and making connections between historical events and current civic responsibilities. Students are learning how government works, what it means to be an engaged citizen, and how individual voices can influence change. We are also strengthening vocabulary development and academic discussion skills as students engage in conversations about rights, responsibilities, leadership, and justice.\r\n\r\n Reading in my classroom is active and student-centered. You will see students annotating text, highlighting key evidence, and turning to partners for structured discussions. We pause to unpack vocabulary, ask questions, and reflect on how the ideas in the text apply to our own community. Students are encouraged to support their thinking with evidence and explain their reasoning clearly. Reading is not passive. It is thoughtful, purposeful, and connected to the world around them. Several students have truly connected with these books. Some of my quieter scholars have found their voice during civics discussions, especially when we talk about fairness and leadership. One student in particular has been especially engaged when reading about young activists and leaders. He often stays after class to ask additional questions and has started sharing what he is learning at home with his family. Seeing that level of curiosity and ownership is powerful.\r\n\r\n Your support has given my students access to texts that are building both literacy skills and leadership capacity.
