Our school has students with very diverse abilities. Some of the students on the trip would read anything you give them, but many are poor readers, or have an immediate negative reaction to reading a book. Using graphic novels leveled the playing field for all of the students. Because they are so accessible, we had success with everyone reading and having a shared literary experience.\r\n\r\nThe reading began before the trip. Students became 'experts' on different events an places. When we arrived at a place, like the Edmund Pettus Bridge, those students would become our tour guides. Having read the books, the students really lit up when we saw places for the first time. They already knew the importance or these sacred places.\r\n\r\nA major component to planning a field study for my students includes trying to save money. We use library to make materials, we seek out volunteer speakers, and sometimes stay at schools or churches to save money. Having the donated books helped us save money, and gave the students a keepsake from the trip. With help of donors, we offered an excellent learning experience for a reasonable cost.","fullyFundedDate":1709215560296,"projectUrl":"project/civil-rights-march/8038779/","projectTitle":"Civil Rights March","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Ramsay","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/2102060"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_66291","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":715,"numTeachers":33,"percentFrplEligible":57,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":54,"percentWhite":34,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":3,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"7 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"21.7:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":70.2,"schoolId":66291,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Clark Montessori High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Clark Montessori High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/ohio/cincinnati-public-schools/clark-montessori-school/66291"}
