Maria Montessori believed strongly in the power of a prepared environment. She believed that students of all ages needed the time and space to use their hands as well as their heads to foster a lifelong appreciation for learning. In this prepared environment, the materials become the teachers. This allows students to work at their own pace with proper guidance from their peers and the instructor. By donating to our project you will allow us to create secondary Montessori materials and curriculum that don't yet exist. With these materials the students will have more freedom to choose how to learn content based upon their comprehension and learning styles. We have a wide range of abilities in the same classroom, being that we are full inclusion. I can see how things like laminated cards with information and pictures would be useful for a student who needs more repetition, versus a complex inquiry lab on the same topic that could challenge a student who is ready. One of the goals of Montessori materials is that students take ownership of their learning in the classroom these materials will provide this opportunity for us. Specifically, the printer, laminator, label maker, stacking totes, markers, paint, dropper bottles, trimmer, paper and folders will be used by the students and I to create the Montessori shelf work. The inquiry lab materials: the Candy Electrophoresis; KNEX DNA Replication and Transcription Set; Student Owl Pellet Kit (plus pellet replacements); Probing Cells Game; Carnivorous Creations Kit; Magnetic Animal Cells Set; Prepared Microscope Slides Set; Magnetic Plant Cell Set; Biology Coloring Workbook; Luster Leaf Rapitest Soil Test; Exploration with a Microscope Lab; Curriculum Learning Module: Cells; and the Inquiry Investigation DNA Structure and Replication will serve as the Montessori shelf work activities for students to explore at their own pace.
