The kids absolutely love the book shelf, and I have definitely noticed an uptick in the level of engagement in regards to how much some of the kids want to engage with reading material. The book shelf is used in various ways through our day. In our whole group reading activities, I typically ask one of the kids to choose a book that interests them for the class to read. In another part of the day, following recess and lunch, I will have the kids choose a book from the shelves and they will, for five minutes, independently look through the book. In those five minutes, I encourage them to try to read new words, pronounce words they are familiar with or look at pictures that they think are interesting. All this is done with the intent of getting them engaged with reading. \r\n\r\nI have children of various cognitive development, and so the bookshelf is representative of that classroom context. I have books of various levels, from books being mainly pictures and a single word to books of a higher reading level. The different layers of the book case allows me to differentiate the books in a clearer, more defined manner. Some of my more developed readers, are consistently practicing their reading, with one of my kids reading an entire book to its' end with minimal adult assistance.","fullyFundedDate":1734712144442,"projectUrl":"project/looking-within-our-shelves/9002797/","projectTitle":"Looking Within Our Shelves","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Jose","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9871940"},{"teacherId":6617658,"projectId":7479308,"letterContent":"My students were very excited to receive all of the supplies for Morning Tubs! Students in my class usually use the morning tubs first thing in the morning after unpacking. Students are given very little instruction so that their creativity can flourish. They are simply asked to build something that can be used by people around them or something that is mobile, etc. With the attachable straws, students have built a basketball hoop and a basketball that can be used to play. The magnatiles have been used to build a small toy car garage with a ramp and opening and closing door. Students used a different magnet set to create a wearable hat with a spinner on the top. Lego's have been used to create a heart shaped pencil holder and many other things. I have seen so many amazing creations and students come up with new ideas every single day. \r\n\r\nThe items are not only toys but tools that the students are using to exercise and expand their STEAM skills through designing and building. The students can also rely on these tubs during social emotional learning, as a lot of them can be used as fidgets and can help students relax and directs their focus on project building all while having fun!
