The students dissected the owl pellets while learning about ecosystems, food chains and food webs. However, we also connected our discoveries with the anatomy sorting the bones inside the pellets and discussing their functions.\r\nIt was a very exciting moment in my class to see the students totally engaged in the activity. None of then had known about the owl pellets before and some were grossed out at first. I heard lots of \" Oh, no\", but soon they were all comparing the skulls found inside and had heated discussions if they belonged to shrews or mice. We discussed what scientists can learn about owls and their ecosystem and what would happen in a food web if the population of owls disappeared. \r\nThanks to your generous donation, my students had a fun learning experience they will remember for a long time.","fullyFundedDate":1758575184441,"projectUrl":"project/owl-pellet-study/9729319/","projectTitle":"Owl Pellet Study","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Olga","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-2_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10082623"},{"teacherId":836934,"projectId":9492067,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our art classrooms. Your donations have immediately made a meaningful difference in our daily routines and long-term projects. We are already putting the new supplies to use—organizing student portfolios, preparing materials for our upcoming art show, and supporting our ongoing mixed-media unit. One especially wonderful moment happened during a collaborative collage project: students were able to explore new textures and techniques because we finally had enough organizational tools and fresh supplies to set up multiple creative stations around the room. The confidence and independence they showed during that lesson were made possible by your contribution.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new materials, the room erupted with excitement—true, joyful disbelief. Many of them commented on how \"real\" the classroom felt, like a professional studio, and several immediately began brainstorming projects they had previously felt were out of reach. Thanks to you, their ideas now feel possible. Moving forward, we are using these supplies to prepare for our annual art show while continuing our exploration of personal narrative through visual art. Students are currently developing sketches that will evolve into final pieces for display, and having the right tools allows them to dream bigger and refine their work with pride. We are deeply grateful for your kindness and for the brighter, more creative year you've made possible for our Asheville community. They waited anxiously for them to arrive and when they did , they all wanted to help set them up! Its was also such a nice time for them to help set up the class and make it their own. \r\n\r\nDuring our regular day we engage in different activities that involve students to move around and work collaborative with others. The different spaces you helped us create have witnessed partner talks, read alouds, display making and fun reading. They are truly an essential part of what makes our students feel at ease and comfortable working and learning everyday. They are always eager to sit at the different flexible seating options and not feel locked into a desk and chair. Friday mornings have become my favorite times of each week. Seeing students in their small book discussion groups scattered throughout the library warms my librarian heart immensely. Students have books in hand and flip through them as they discuss different events from their reading and make notes on their book charts. We also meet on Wednesdays at lunchtime and the students absolutely love engaging in our practice battles! They're a pretty competitive bunch! The best part, however, comes throughout each week at different times. It is when Andrea (who I've never known to read a chapter book) comes up to me each morning gushing about last night's reading of Maya and the Robot and when Easton (who only ever voluntarily read DogMan before!!!) becomes a whole new kid in front of my eyes, enthusiastically charging through books in ways I never could have foreseen (he fell hard for Last Musketeer first and it's been continuing strong ever since!!) or when Laurel expresses her undying love for her new favorite book ever, Willa of the Wood. Next week I'll invite my third graders to begin Battle of the Books Junior. There is no way I could have engaged so many readers without your help!! Thank you for your contribution in growing these amazing, young readers!","fullyFundedDate":1752182735164,"projectUrl":"project/bell-bears-become-battle-of-the-books-bo/9332879/","projectTitle":"Bell Bears Become Battle of the Books Bosses in 25-26!!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Brown","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8574687_orig.jpg?crop=1438,1438,x2217,y913&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1724535339042","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/bellbattleofthebooksteam"},{"teacherId":836934,"projectId":9296977,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donation of watercolor paints for our public school art classroom. THANKS TO YOU, we have a Battle of the Books library with plenty of copies available for all of our readers! It was a perfect year for it, too. I have the biggest turnout I've ever had for both my Battle of the Books program and my Battle of the Books Junior (for 3rd graders program). Thirty-six 4th and 5th students signed up for Battle of the Books and another 16 third graders signed up for Battle of the Books Junior! For a small school this is a phenomenal turnout.\r\n\r\nOne of the most gratifying things about this program is when kids love a certain book so much that they absolutely rave about it to their friends and their teachers. I particularly love it if the book is the first in a series and the kids beg me to buy the rest of the series. This just happened with one of our titles, Jack and the Geniuses: At the bottom of the world by Bill Nye and Gregory Mone. It is easily one of the most popular books of the season and I just got books 2 and 3 in the trilogy into the library. Needless to say, they were immediately checked out!\r\n\r\nI have some students in the program who are struggling readers and I'm especially proud of them for electing to be part of it! For these students, I sat down individually with them to create reading charts to help keep them on track with their reading. One student pops her head into the library every morning to tell me where she's at in her book. Two weeks ago, she triumphantly came in with her finished book (which she loved!) and checked out another! It was an unbelievably moving moment and makes me so proud!\r\n\r\nYour generosity made a difference in my school and to my readers. THANK YOU for supporting this great program and for helping put reading material into my students' hands. I really believe that this program can be a game-changer for our kids but it only works if we have the books to give them and a great community to support them.
