"Did you see that? I never thought I would be able to do that!" These were the words of a 3rd grade student who got her first double-under with a jump rope. This student is one who, up until making the team, thought she would never be associated with any sports. Outside of school she spends time at an acting studio and previously thought of herself as 'uncoordinated'. Well, this experience has surely changed her view. The student I have described is now in her second year of being on the Jump Rope Squad at Bell Elementary. It is labeled as just a jump rope team, but since I started the team 2 years ago, it has proved to be so much more than that.
These students are building character while strengthening their bodies and gaining confidence in themselves. By providing each student with his or her own personal jump rope, you are helping to make that child feel like a part of this school "family". My goal is for each member of this team to understand how valued he or she is, both in and outside of these walls. This is an opportunity for these children, second through fifth grade, to build skills together and work as a team for possibly the first time, especially alongside older or younger students.
I was on a jump rope team myself in elementary school and it was my very first experience with sports. It's not hard for me to recognize the advantages I gained from the experience on the team as a now competitive CrossFitter. I have first-hand experience of what this team can do to influence a child's life and I am honored to now be able to kick-start that love of fitness and health for this new generation. Having the proper resources is imperative for any classroom to function properly. Many of our school systems are not aware of the vast majority of resources available for our performing arts students. Our band students at Eddie White perform at a very high level. Learning theory and Etudes are the building blocks to students grasping their instruments and being successful. We have currently none of these resources. In order to get them I have to pay out of pocket. To use items such as the device for woodwind students we have to use items such as PVC pipes when there are items specially made for them to learn to make the correct sounds.
