Whenever students finish their work, they head straight for the microscopes instead of their computers. I love watching them choose curiosity over screen time. They're zooming in on tiny details, asking questions, and seeing everyday objects in a completely new way. It has been so amazing to watch my students fall in love with early learning chapter books, and wanting to read the next one in the set! They ask me for them, and even tell me their favorite part about their books and share with their peers.\r\n\r\nWhat our reading time looks like, is there are 15 minutes set aside after lunch, and students follow a reading rotation where they can grab a cushion, read on one of my carpets, at their set, with finger google eye puppets, or a stuffed animal. They would resort to YouTube or video games to kill time and would rush through their work to get to screen time. Now, the expectation is to choose one of the \"done options\" with no screens allowed! I was expecting a little pushback from students but they've been so excited for all the new things, that they welcomed the new rule. \r\nStudents work together to build towers out of mini magnatiles, create new sculptures out of brainflakes, or challenge themselves with one of the new logic games. My classroom is buzzing with creativity and ideas instead of silent with screens. This project has not only changed how my students use their free time, but it's shown them that when they're in my classroom, they are creative, collaborative scientists. They get so excited to see what was donated and then when they get to use them. I run STEM centers so there are 7 different groups working on STEM, coding, and computer skills throughout the room. Students are in small groups of 4-5 students and each time they come, they get to go to a different center. \r\n\r\nThe KNEX were a huge hit as you can see from the pictures. Students have been so creative and have blown my mind with their creations.
