Thanks to our donors, my students now have a cozy beanbag, a weighted stuffed animal, and a variety of fidget tools they can use when they need a quiet moment to reset.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were so excited to see all of the new items. They especially loved exploring the fidget toys and the weighted stuffed animal. We talked about how the calm-down corner is not a place for punishment, but a safe space where they can take a break, practice calming their bodies, and get ready to learn again.\r\n\r\nWe are now using the corner throughout our school day when students feel overwhelmed, frustrated, upset, or simply need a few quiet minutes. Students are learning to recognize their emotions and choose a strategy that helps them feel ready to rejoin the classroom. One of my favorite moments has been seeing students independently ask to use the calm-down corner, take a few minutes with a fidget or the weighted stuffed animal, and then return to their learning feeling more prepared.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, my students will keep practicing identifying their feelings and choosing appropriate calming strategies. My students use it every day during morning meetings, read-alouds, class discussions, and whole-group learning. It gives us a comfortable and welcoming space where we can come together as a class.\r\n\r\nWhen my students first saw the rug, they were so excited to have a special space of their own! They immediately wanted to sit on it and were excited to learn that it would be our meeting place for different activities throughout the school day.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments has been watching my students gather on the rug for our morning circle. We sit together, share our ideas, practice listening to one another, and begin our day as a classroom community. Having a designated space makes these moments feel even more meaningful and helps my students know when it is time to come together and learn.\r\n\r\nAs we continue through the school year, we will keep using our rug for lessons, conversations, stories, and activities that help my students build their academic and social-emotional skills. Our school received the stools for the music classroom a little over a month ago, and it has made such a positive impact on our kids learning. When my kids saw the stools for the first time, they could not wait to take them to their floor spots and use them during class, and they were just in awe that generous people donated to help provide them! \r\n\r\nAs we have been preparing for two music programs, my 2nd through 5th graders have been able to practice sitting with nice singing posture while learning their songs. I can tell that they feel more grounded and comfortable with this seating, and their focus has improved so much!\r\n\r\nI have also been able to begin bucket drumming with many of my grades, and the stools make this process so much easier. They are able to sit nicely behind their instrument, while being able to see me during instruction. We have also played some \"musical stools\" which is slowly becoming one of their favorite games when we have a few extra minutes to spare!\r\n\r\nI have had so many students express their gratitude for this seating, and tell me how much more comfortable they are in the music room.
