One of the best and research-proven strategies to teaching a foreign language is through comprehensible input (CI) instruction, which is what I use in my classroom. The main idea is to expose the student to a simple set of vocabulary in the target language on a daily basis, having them absorb the language in context, much as young children do when learning their first language. One key component in teaching using the CI method of instruction is utilizing comprehensible readers--books written specifically for language-learners.\r\n\r\n\"El escape cubano\", one of the many books I received through your generosity, is an example of such a book that also teaches its reader a bit about Cuban history. The kids loved learning Spanish and Cuban culture through the book, as its simple and repetitive vocabulary allows them to understand the majority of the book using context clues, images, and the overall flow of the story, despite the entire text being in Spanish. \r\n\r\nIt gives students a great amount of confidence to suddenly understand a challenging concept by themselves. One of the biggest hurdles that I find in my classroom now is the lack of confidence from students from the get-go. If a student believes that they won't understand, then they actually won't. Getting students to read an entire book in Spanish seems to me to build confidence faster than anything else, which makes the entire learning experience better overall. \r\n\r\nThank you for your help!","fullyFundedDate":1766467058433,"projectUrl":"project/spanish-literacy-differentiation-for-di/9699854/","projectTitle":"Spanish Literacy: Differentiation for Diverse Classrooms","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Berman","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9621421"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_77984","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":314,"numTeachers":29,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":2,"percentBlack":72,"percentWhite":13,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":11,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"10.8:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":49.2,"schoolId":77984,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Central Vpa High School SW on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Central Vpa High School SW","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/missouri/st-louis-public-schools/central-visual-perform-arts-high-school/77984"}
