Many of my students come to school without having had a full meal, and by the time we reach mid-morning or the afternoon, their energy and concentration can drop significantly. Now, we have built in a short \"brain boost\" break where students can grab a snack and reset. This has become an essential part of our routine. During one recent reading workshop, I noticed a remarkable difference—students who would typically struggle to stay focused were actively participating, discussing the text, and even volunteering to read aloud. Something as simple as having a snack beforehand helped them show up ready to learn.\r\nOne particularly meaningful moment happened during a math group activity. Students were working collaboratively to solve multi-step problems, and I quietly offered snacks before we began. The shift in mood was immediate. Students were more patient with each other, more willing to explain their thinking, and less frustrated when they encountered challenges. One student even said, \"I can think better now,\" which perfectly sums up the impact you've had. It wasn't just about hunger—it was about giving them the ability to fully engage.\r\nWhen the snacks first arrived, the students' reactions were filled with excitement and gratitude. Their eyes lit up, and they couldn't believe that people they've never met cared enough to support them in this way. I've seen fewer disruptions, improved behavior, and a stronger sense of community among students.\r\nLooking ahead, we are continuing to build on this support as we move into more collaborative and project-based learning. Students are currently working on group projects that require sustained focus, problem-solving, and teamwork. Having access to snacks ensures that they can maintain their energy and stay engaged for longer periods of time. Our next steps include incorporating longer work sessions where students research, create, and present their ideas—and these snacks will play a key role in keeping them fueled and ready.\r\nWe also plan to involve students more in taking ownership of our classroom routines, including responsibly managing snack time and ensuring that everyone has access. Students who bump heads in the classroom also come to the clinic for ice. I also use ice packs to help with itching from insect bites or small rashes. \r\nAs an elementary school nurse, an ice maker is a vital part of the school clinic.
