Students, and myself, have been very excited to see the packages roll in throughout the beginning of the year. Students have been very curious about what we're going to use these materials for, and as I have unpacked them, their excitement has grown.\r\n\r\nAs a part of this project, our classroom received a variety of picture, chapter, and non-fiction books that will allow students and teachers alike to explore the history of Native Americans in our country. Through the use of these books, my teaching partner and I plan on teaching reading standards connected to fiction comprehension and folktales/mythology. \r\n\r\nSince our school is an international baccalaureate program, we like to combine many of our subjects into a transdisciplinary unit. During this unit, we will not only be exploring Native Americans and their history in Indiana, but we will also inquire about how Native Americans expressed themselves through written and oral language, dance, music, and art. We will connect their forms of expression to our own in present day. The art materials included in this project will help students have hands-on experience into these lines of inquiry.\r\n\r\nWe cannot thank you enough for your donation to this project. Creating a cozy section for my kiddos who have recently leveled up from easy readers has increased interest in that part of the library collection. There is now room in that space for some books to be displayed face-out and the ability to mix up the kinds of shelving has made the section easier to browse and easier to search. The second graders in particular are excited to have an area that is just right from most of them but I even see fourth and fifth graders in there!\r\n\r\nI was able to use a the magnetic labels to mark the ranges for the shelves in that are and other parts of the library collection. This has helped students to find their way in the media center with more independence. \r\n\r\nThe cardstock enabled me to make booklets for my readers to develop their skills summarizing and evaluating books and reflecting on their reading. They love to decorate the covers and make their \"books\" uniquely theirs. \r\n\r\nThank you so much for your support for my students.
