My students are typical 6, 7 and 8 year-olds in a 2nd grade inquiry based classroom. Our school is a magnet program in a large urban district. The school is an International Baccalaureate (IB) school with a rigorous curriculum. The students in the K-8 program are expected to work hard every day, all day. Some of my second graders are at the beginning stages of the reading process, some are right on level, and some are reading two or three years above level. Each and every one of them likes to move. That might be a tapping foot, a bobbing head, or what looks like an electrified body! At our school, we encourage students to be active learners. When you are young, holding still is nearly impossible. I believe that movement allows students to refresh their brains and increase learning.
