Because of your generosity, I was able to provide each of my fourth-grade students with a chapter book and purchase mini Edison robots for our classroom. Thanks to your support, my learners were excited to dive into the adventures of *The Wild Robot*.\r\n\r\nThe story became a springboard for engaging STEM learning experiences. Students first researched robots to build background knowledge and curiosity about how they work. They were then introduced to our classroom's mini Edison robots and learned how to code them to match events from the story. In one chapter, the main character, Roz, must chase bears away, and my students eagerly programmed their robots to do just that. Watching the story come to life through hands-on learning was incredibly exciting, and the enthusiasm in the classroom was contagious.\r\n\r\nNone of these meaningful experiences would have been possible without your generosity. Basket weaving is a unit that all of the students look forward to—even our youngest first graders get excited seeing the in-progress baskets and knowing that they will have their chance in a few years.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite parts of this project is seeing learners who sometimes struggle in other academic areas have an \"aha\" moment, realizing that they are making something concrete and beautiful. I start every year by telling students that I have never had a fourth grader who couldn't make a basket. This is my 15th year of success! Seeing the pride on their faces as they complete their work is incredible. Students work in small groups, often commenting on one another's progress as each basket evolves into a unique expression. While everyone learns the same basic technique, every basket turns out different.\r\n\r\nAs a class, we also discuss the cultural relevance of baskets. Basket making spans many cultures and time periods, often bridging necessity and artistic expression. Students learn how different communities around the world have used baskets for gathering, storing food, and daily living, while also incorporating decorative patterns and personal design.\r\n\r\nThis unit also supports literacy development. Students are introduced to and practice using new vocabulary related to weaving techniques, materials, and design. Through class discussions about cultural traditions and artistic purpose, students build language skills while learning to describe processes, patterns, and artistic choices. Connecting visual art with historical and cultural context strengthens both visual and verbal literacy.","fullyFundedDate":1760927178021,"projectUrl":"project/weaving-in-the-narrative/9845868/","projectTitle":"Weaving in the Narrative","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Goetting","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-6_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7653590"},{"teacherId":10311088,"projectId":9830821,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous contribution to our classroom! Your support has brought so much joy and creativity to our students. The calm corner fidgets, magnetic blocks, crayons, play dough, and stretchy fidgets are being used in so many exciting ways.\r\n\r\nDuring indoor recess, students have been building \"dinosaur habitats\" with the magnetic blocks, imagining detailed landscapes and learning to collaborate as they design ecosystems. Some have even started writing short stories about their dinosaurs, connecting creativity with literacy skills. \r\n\r\nIn the calm corner, students love using the fidgets and play dough to take a break and return to instruction. They independently put the timer on and take a 5 minute break, which is an extraordinary skill for frustration and moments of overwhelm. \r\n\r\nAs a class, we stretch out letter sounds in reading, which helps them focus and feel confident as they practice reading new words. It makes it fun and engaging. The crayons and drawing activities allow them to express ideas from lessons in visual form, and it's incredible to see their imagination come alive on paper.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were thrilled! There were squeals of excitement as they explored the blocks, stretched the fidgets, and immediately started creating. Their curiosity and engagement were contagious—they couldn't wait to try everything!\r\n\r\nStudents now get to take a cushion square to sit on comfortably and a clip board to collaboratively work around the room while study music is playing. The stools and cushions are a top pick when it comes to reading around the classroom! The stools are also used during small group and give my students a sense of fun as they work with me 1 on 1 or with their peers. We just started our first literacy circle using the Magic Treehouse books! Students are loving them and it's great to see them read stories from when I was in school.
