Prior to your gift, we only had enough copies for a single class set, which limited how the students could interact with the text. Now, five different class periods—over 100 students—will have their own personal copy to use throughout the unit. While many of our students were already familiar with the story as a piece of popular fiction, your contribution allows them to treat it as a serious object of study. They finally have the opportunity to look deeply at the novel, discovering its literary complexity and its profound cultural relevance.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, reading is an active, communal process. With these new texts, we are moving beyond simple plot comprehension to introduce skills including the study of complex philosophical principles. We will be looking at Collins's development of ideas about Just War Theory and Celebrity Culture. Because every student now has a personal copy, I can now have them reading in class and working individually and in groups to unpack specific passages and tracking development of literary elements throughout the novel. Having the book physically in their hands at all times is essential for developing the \"close reading\" habits I strive to instil in all of my students.\r\n\r\nThe impact on our students has been immediate and exciting. The day the boxes arrived, I proudly carried them to our library to be processed and shelved for student use. Our librarians were just as excited at the new resource that will immediately and continually impact student learning.\r\n\r\nYour gift has transformed a popular story into a powerful tool for academic and personal growth.","fullyFundedDate":1774908742683,"projectUrl":"project/hunger-games-the-dystopia-of-celebrity/10164466/","projectTitle":"Hunger Games: The Dystopia of Celebrity Culture and Digital Disaster","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bowers","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9841734_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y447&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759335589936","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9841734"},{"teacherId":9841734,"projectId":9748126,"letterContent":"Thank you for your meaningful support of me as an educator and my students as uniquely talented learners. Your generosity has enabled me to empower their creativity and offer them choices for how to demonstrate their understanding of the texts we are reading.\r\n\r\nMost recently as we've been reading Jason Reynold's Long Way Down, students have been able to use many of the supplies to visually represent and map out the complex character connections and motivations of each of the novel's ghosts. \r\nThe highlighters and post its are also a vital tool to visually map out both critically reading and help show connections in their own writing to make sure they are properly developing connections between claims, evidences, and analyses. \r\n\r\nOne thing I really appreciate about these supplies is that it allows me to give the artists among my students to shine.
