In our Early Childhood Special Education classroom, reading is much more than simply listening to a story. These interactive books give my students multiple ways to participate, even when traditional story time can be difficult for them.\r\n\r\nThe books introduce important early learning skills such as letter and word recognition, vocabulary development, listening and comprehension, identifying colors and emotions, making connections to animals and the environment, and understanding concepts like weather and the solar system. The touch-and-feel features also encourage students to use their fine-motor skills and explore sensory experiences while staying engaged with the story.\r\n\r\nMy students especially enjoy books that allow them to touch, move, and discover something on each page. Students who may not always sit through a traditional story are often more willing to participate when they can actively interact with the book. Seeing a student reach for a book, turn the pages independently, point to a picture, or become excited when they recognize something is incredibly rewarding. The soft lights and moving bubbles are very soothing, helping students slow their breathing, refocus, and return to learning more quickly.\r\n\r\nThe reversible sequin sensory panel has become a favorite hands-on sensory activity. Students enjoy running their hands across the sequins to change the colors and patterns. This activity provides a calming sensory experience while also supporting focus and fine motor engagement.\r\n\r\nThe feelings and emotions puzzle cards have been a wonderful tool for teaching social-emotional skills. Students practice identifying emotions, matching facial expressions, and talking about how people feel in different situations.
