My students have severe disabilities and are non verbal. They all use AAC devices to communicate and receive instruction. They are unable to draw or write personal thank you notes, but I know from their reactions how happy that they have been with all of the new games.\r\n\r\nThe bins were so needed and so useful, but unfortunately, most of them were destroyed when a dysregulated student was struggling with compliance and they were cracked and unusable. I had to find alternative containers for my students to use for their belongings and resources. \r\n\r\n\r\nOnce agin, my sincere gratitude to you for your generous donation and your unselfishness with your giving. It was a great success. This was the first time I have had the necessary time to complete a novel and I can tell how meaningful the experience has been, for my students and for me.\r\n\r\nOur first choice was El Capybara Con Botas, by Mira Canion about a capybara named Carlos who does not know how to swim, so he wears boots and walks upright. This leads Carlos into many Ecuadorian adventures with other animals from the jungle and the Galapagos Islands.\r\nStudents learned about animals, geography, culture and even reinforced their understanding of the water cycle through this gentle story. \r\n\r\nHumans are hard wired for learning through stories, so when beginning students, also known as Novices, are introduced to a story, there is a lot of repetition, high frequency words and phrases and a lot of repetition (see what I did there?). Mira Canion also understands that readers need and want relatable characters, even if they have four legs instead of two! Reading together, sometimes as a whole class taking turns out loud, or sometimes listening to me, and sometimes choosing a stuffed animal to read to, builds confidence in comprehension of a new language. \r\n\r\nWe will finish our remaining months of seventh grade reading Tumba, also by Mira Canion. Students are excited to read another book about ghosts, Mexico and Dia de Muertos. As the school year winds down, my students and I will have an anchor in a compelling and comprehensible text. Reading a novel gives us something to talk about, write about, express understanding and gain proficiency in a second language. Reading a novel develops sustained attention spans and focus in my students' primarily digital world. \r\n\r\nWith your support, my dream has come true to read together and gain proficiency through novels. Thank you again for your support!","fullyFundedDate":1770294320910,"projectUrl":"project/vamos-a-leer-we-are-going-to-read/9877354/","projectTitle":"¡Vamos a Leer! When the materials first arrived, students were beyond excited to open the boxes and see what was inside. They marveled at the flair pens and gel pens - which have been such a great resource for our science sketchnotes! My students were especially excited for the hot chocolate and drink mixes.\r\n\r\nWith the addition of the donated materials, I have found my students striving to go above and beyond in their daily lessons to earn tickets towards prizes. Students are more engaged, more willing to participate in class discussions and review games, and overall challenging themselves on our daily content.\r\n\r\nNot only have we used the classroom store for prizes as they earn tickets, but I have done a \"barista\" day where students enjoy hot chocolate as they complete independent work. I have also used the various snacks for students in need during the day if they arrive hungry or need a little something extra to take home over a long weekend.\r\n\r\nMy hope for this project is to continue engaging students and helping them to challenge themselves academically. As middle schoolers, snacks and treats make it that much more special to them! Thank you for everything you have done for my classroom. It has been a joy to watch my students re-engage and commit themselves to their academics this year.","fullyFundedDate":1767221055566,"projectUrl":"project/classroom-reward-store/9796870/","projectTitle":"Classroom Reward Store","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. O'Leary","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10303595"},{"teacherId":332007,"projectId":8614186,"letterContent":"On behalf of many Grade 8 students at BMS, thank you for providing this opportunity!\r\nOver the course of the year, students from the whole grade expressed interest in myriad \"seminar\" offerings ranging from optics, prisms, ocean acidification, and dissection. Dissection was so incredibly popular that three extra sessions were offered in the days right before the end of the year! \r\n\r\nStudents had the opportunity to dissect a sheep eye and / or an earthworm. Some students dressed for the experience as an observer and others dressed to dissect. However students chose to participate in the dissection, the outcome and feedback was universal: grateful, empowered, and eager to find more dissection experiences!\r\n\r\nThank you again.
