My students were very excited to receive more xylophones, and they really appreciate the extra playing time that comes with extra instruments. We have already put the new instruments to good use, playing melodies and bass lines to accompany singing. We have practiced some improvising using the pentatonic scale. My 4th graders took some of these improvised patterns and created original compositions. The same 4th graders also recently performed a song from West Africa called \"Funga Alafia\" using drums and xylophones.\r\nI like to ask my students at the end of the year what some of their favorite things about music class were. Overwhelmingly, playing instruments is always top of the list. Students love sporting those at recess (and even sometimes in class!). Several boys in particular love the comic book pens and use them every day. The pencils have been helpful to students who really need school supplies while also letting them show off the fact that they earned a prize.\r\n\r\nI truly appreciate your support with this project.
