My students have spent this very difficult year learning and growing and hoping that the future will hold more good days than bad. They have pushed through a global pandemic, huge interruptions to their daily lives, social isolation from their friends and families, and the constant anxiety that this year has heaped upon us all. I want them to walk out of third grade feeling triumphant and empowered to face whatever obstacles the world has in store. I want them to walk into fourth grade next year feeling prepared, loved, and hopeful. I would like to gift each of my students a copy of Amanda Gorman's Inaugural poem "The Hill we Climb." This book is a touchstone for this year and the greater struggle we've faced as Americans. For my students, many of whom are BIPOC, these words will mean so much and have already inspired them as writers. I hope to give this gift so that they can have a tangible reminder of all that they can and will accomplish.
