In Pre-K, books are one of our most powerful teaching tools. Through these new stories, my students are building early literacy skills like recognizing letters and sounds, learning new vocabulary, and understanding how stories work from beginning to end. Many of the books also help us talk about big feelings, friendship, and kindness—important lessons for four- and five-year-olds as they learn how to be part of a classroom community.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and joyful. During story time, students make predictions, point out letters they recognize, and talk about what characters might be feeling. These books are also used during small group lessons, where we practice retelling stories, identifying characters, and connecting the stories to our own lives. Because the library now includes books with diverse characters and experiences, my students can see themselves reflected in the stories we read together.\r\n\r\nSeveral students head straight to the library each morning and excitedly choose books to \"read\" to their friends. Even students who were previously hesitant about books are now eager to sit down and explore the pictures, tell their own versions of the story, and share what they notice. Your support has helped turn our classroom library into a place of curiosity, imagination, and learning.
