After I took a black and white image of themselves they used mod podge to glue their picture and then painted a string of Christmas lights. \r\n\r\nAfter we learned how to tell time to the hour and half hour we wrote and illustrated our own book using the blank books. \"Mi Dia Escolar\" (My School Day) tells each student's story about what goes on within their school day from the moment they wake up to the moment they return home. \r\n\r\nFor Mother's Day, they drew their own special picture and decorated the wooden frame. The one that was inside my classroom when I returned to Blacow six years ago was a hand me down that had seen much better days. Unknown to me there is no budget at schools for furniture or incidentals like rugs. I was told recently at a meeting that the district has no budget for new furniture, how could this possibly be the case? I was baffled. I have never had a new piece of furniture in my 27 year career that was not purchased by me. I am pretty confident that the student tables in my classroom are as old as my career. My carpet really needed replacement and so I decided to complete a Donor's Choose grant to get a new carpet as well as some additional Magna Tiles for the students to play with.\r\n\r\nI was very excited to see a handful of our classroom families come forward to make private donations to the project shortly after sharing it with them. Within three weeks the project was fully funded and less than two weeks after that our custodian came into class one morning to drop off the brand new carpet to our class. I was very excited to see him roll up the old and grimy carpet and replace it with the brand new brightly colored rug with a colorful button design. The kids were super excited to see it and sit on it. It really is amazing how one simple replacement can really change the look of a classroom environment and the feel of it. Kids are now very eager and excited to sit on the new carpet, do pair share activities, listen to stories, do lessons together and play during Fiesta Friday time. I was proud to have the new rug during our recent Open House so that our families could see their donations at work. Additionally the students are very happy to play with their additional sets of Magna Tiles. They always have a blast.\r\n\r\nFrom the bottom of my heart, I thank you for your kindness and generosity. I know financial times are challenging for most of us. Thank you for prioritizing our classroom and really making me feel very supported as an educator. I told the class today they are one of the very best classes I have ever taught, and I really mean that. They deserve the very best. I am happy that you helped me provide them with a new rug and Magna Tiles to enjoy playing with this school year. Muchas gracias.","fullyFundedDate":1737842373421,"projectUrl":"project/fiesta-friday-play-area/9036438/","projectTitle":"Fiesta Friday Play Area!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Andrea MacKenzie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7460385_orig.jpg?crop=2544,2544,x0,y407&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1736910009732","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7460385"},{"teacherId":9714812,"projectId":9114649,"letterContent":"I want to express my deepest gratitude for your generous donation of magnetic tiles and kinetic sand. These materials have quickly become invaluable resources in my counseling sessions with students, offering them a safe, creative space to express their emotions and ideas. Your support has made a meaningful impact on their personal growth, and I'd love to share how these resources are being used in our classroom.\r\n\r\nThe magnetic tiles help students visualize their thoughts and emotions. During one-on-one sessions, students often build structures that represent their feelings or challenges. For example, one student created a tower symbolizing their struggles with confidence. As they built, we talked through each piece, and it became clear how they viewed their personal journey. This hands-on activity encourages them to open up and communicate in a way they might not otherwise. The tiles provide a creative outlet, making it easier for students to discuss difficult topics without feeling overwhelmed.\r\n\r\nThe kinetic sand has also been a valuable tool in calming students and providing a sensory experience. Molding and shaping the sand has a soothing effect, allowing students to relax and focus. This is especially helpful for those who struggle with anxiety or have trouble focusing during conversations. One student mentioned that using the sand helped them feel \"grounded\" and less stressed, which led to a deeper conversation about managing anxiety. The kinetic sand also provides a physical way for students to release tension and reflect on their emotions.\r\n\r\nThese tools have fostered creativity and imagination while helping students express their feelings. I plan to incorporate them into group activities, like collaborative projects where students build together using the magnetic tiles, promoting teamwork and problem-solving. The kinetic sand will also be used in group settings to encourage students to relax and share their thoughts in a creative way.\r\n\r\nThe impact of these resources on the students cannot be overstated. Your contribution has given them a safe and creative space to express themselves, build confidence, and develop emotional intelligence. Many students have become more comfortable discussing their feelings and challenges. These tools have helped me connect with the students on a deeper level, and I'm grateful to offer them such a meaningful resource.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generosity. Your donation has made a lasting difference in the lives of the students, and I look forward to continuing to use the magnetic tiles and kinetic sand to support their emotional and creative growth.","fullyFundedDate":1740592082834,"projectUrl":"project/playful-expression-harnessing-art-to-ma/9114649/","projectTitle":"Playful Expression: Harnessing Art to Manage Big Feelings","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. A.R.","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-7_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9714812"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_3788","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":576,"numTeachers":23,"percentFrplEligible":42,"percentAsian":22,"percentBlack":1,"percentWhite":10,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":59,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"25.0:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":87.6,"schoolId":3788,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Blacow Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Blacow Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/california/fremont-unified-school-district/blacow-elementary-school/3788"}
