Your generosity helped us bring exciting Nevada Young Readers Award picture books into our library and turn reading into something students could truly experience together. Instead of simply reading a book and moving on to the next one, students had the opportunity to read, compare, discuss, predict, and vote for their favorites. They practiced important literacy skills such as identifying story elements, making connections, understanding characters and their motivations, comparing themes, using evidence to explain their opinions, and thinking about how illustrations help tell a story. The bracket format gave students a real reason to pay close attention to each book because they wanted to make an informed choice about which title should move on to the next round.\r\n\r\nReading in our library became a much more social and exciting experience during the challenge. Students talked with classmates about their favorite books, defended their choices, made predictions about which books would advance, and were genuinely curious to see what other students would choose. I especially loved seeing students who don't always speak up during regular reading activities become eager to share their opinions when it came to voting. Students who are already enthusiastic readers enjoyed discovering new authors and stories, while more reluctant readers were drawn in by the fun of the competition and the opportunity to have their voices heard. The books gave us natural opportunities to practice speaking and listening, critical thinking, and respectful discussion while still keeping the focus on the simple joy of a great story. This was their first experience writing a book and they loved it! Then, I opened up the library for students to read each other's books and take Accelerated Reader quizzes. How wonderful! At our Title I school of approximately 800 students, we have many students who struggle with reading or simply do not see themselves as readers yet. For some of these students, a traditional chapter book can feel overwhelming before they even open it. Graphic novels give them a way into reading that feels approachable, interesting, and fun. The combination of pictures and text helps students understand vocabulary, make predictions, follow the sequence of events, identify important details, and make inferences about characters and the story. Students are also learning that illustrations can provide information that is just as important as the words on the page. While they may think they are simply enjoying a funny or exciting story, they are actually practicing important comprehension skills and becoming more confident readers at the same time.\r\n\r\nIn our library, reading time is all about giving students opportunities to choose books they are genuinely interested in and enjoy reading. I love watching students browse the shelves, pick up a book, flip through the pages, and suddenly realize, \"I want to read this!\" The graphic novels have been especially exciting for students who have been reluctant to choose books in the past. Some students are drawn to the humor and action, while others love following favorite characters through a series. I have also noticed students talking to each other about the books they are reading and recommending titles to their friends. That excitement is something we want to encourage. When a student who usually avoids reading becomes absorbed in a book, reads several pages independently, or proudly tells me that they finished a book, that is a big win. These books give struggling readers a chance to experience success without feeling like they are being given \"easier\" work. Instead, they are reading stories they enjoy while developing fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and critical-thinking skills.\r\n\r\nYour donation has done more than put new books on our library shelves. It has helped give our students another reason to pick up a book and another opportunity to feel successful as readers.
