Students were immediately excited once they saw the extra supplies because it opened a world of possibilities for them in a class that is typically filled with mainly reading, writing, and speaking. Instead of focusing only on the form of the piece, students are now able to think more carefully about how the surface can help communicate an idea, mood or personal style.\r\n\r\nStudents were excited to explore the different tools and immediately began testing the kinds of marks and textures they could create. One of my favorite parts has been watching them compare techniques, borrow ideas from one another and then make completely different choices in their own work. Having access to a wider range of tools has encouraged more experimentation and has helped students become more intentional about craftsmanship and detail.\r\n\r\nAs we continue with our ceramics projects, students will use these resources to build on their skills and create increasingly complex surfaces and designs. The tools will support them through future projects as they explore relief, texture, pattern and personal symbolism in their work. It took some time to teach them how to prep their bobbins, but they watched carefully, applied what they observed, and learned in real time.\r\n\r\nThey quickly discovered that sewing a straight line is a lot harder when you push the pedal too hard! As they practiced and learned to adjust their speed, they became more confident and excited.
