Because of you, every student now has access to their own copy of Holes and Wonder. Having class sets of these novels makes such a difference because we are able to read, discuss, and learn together as a classroom community. My students were so excited to receive the books, and they have already been very engaged and interested in the stories.\r\n\r\nIn our classroom, we use Collaborative Strategic Reading, so students read silently, read with partners, and participate in reading circles. As we read, students practice vocabulary strategies and \"fix-it-up\" strategies when they come across challenging words or confusing parts of the text. These novels also give us meaningful opportunities to practice important fifth-grade reading skills, such as finding theme, analyzing characters, using evidence from the text, and making inferences.\r\n\r\nWe are also connecting the novels to shorter texts from our ELA curriculum based on the skill we are learning each week. Students are making connections between texts, comparing ideas and characters, and sharing their thinking with one another.
