This is an introduction to the topic of dystopian novels, with a focus on character point of view. Students have immersed themselves into the novel. They are excited to read the next chapter, and they have immense empathy for the main character. \r\n\r\nIn addition to receiving a class set of the novel, we received copies of the graphic novel. This has helped all of my students engage with the text more deeply. We read a chapter as a class, and as students are taking notes and writing reflections they have the opportunity to look at the chapter in graphic novel format. This helps students who may struggle with reading because they are able to better visualize what is happening in the story. \r\n\r\nIt can be so difficult to get middle school students to get excited about reading, especially right before summer break. I am so grateful that your generous donation has gotten even my most reluctant readers excited about the text. Several students were even excited about starting their own book club and checked out books from the same author and series. This is important because our middle school team has had upwards of 50 student athletes try out each season, and we try to keep at least 40 athletes on the team.\r\n\r\nTime to practice without the need of a coach's involvement, due to the high interest of the sport at our school, is increasingly important.
