This year, we are using a different style of learning math called Building Thinking Classrooms. Instead of primarily receiving information through direct instruction, students learn to think, collaborate, and solve problems in random groups of 2-3 while standing at vertical whiteboards. They no longer sit at their desks for long periods of time, limiting their opportunities for students to discuss mathematical ideas and strategies. The whiteboards encourage students to explain their thinking and listen to the ideas of others. The erasable surface supports productive struggle where students can attempt a strategy without feeling like they are permanently committing to an answer. If the strategy doesn't work, they can easily erase and try again, which lowers the perceived risk of making mistakes while encouraging persistence.\r\n\r\nThe use of vertical whiteboards may seem like a minor change, but it has had a significant impact on student engagement, mathematical reasoning, and classroom culture. Students are collaborating more, engaging in higher levels of discourse, and actually having fun while learning math. One of my students said, \"Math is really fun this year because we get to get up and work together while learning!\" Students are learning not only from me as their teacher, but also from their classmates. This style of teaching frees me up to give immediate feedback and intervention as I move from group to group. I am able to be a facilitator of student thinking, rather than the gatekeeper of mathematical procedures and correct answers.\r\n\r\nOur next steps include extending this style of learning to other content areas such as reading, writing, and science. I love seeing the students enjoying their learning environment, and the pride they have when they help each other work through challenging concepts.
