It is an awesome adaptation of Orpheus and Eurydice. As we read, students learned about adaptations as a genre. They also learned about books written in verse. They also made tons of connections to their own lives - as the book is about 7th graders and set in Boston. It is set in middle school because even though Orpheus and Eurydice is set in the underworld, middle school can be a form of hell too! \r\n\r\nIn my class, students read full books. They read for homework and then we discuss in class the next day. Students have been mastering the art of the Socratic Seminar, student-led discussions based on what they find important about the book. They had great thoughts about the text in the discussion and especially about characters and their motivations and development.\r\n\r\nThis book especially appealed to our LGBTQ+ students in my class, as the book is about two queer teenagers who fall in love. \r\n\r\nThank you so much again for donating to this project!","fullyFundedDate":1773838983826,"projectUrl":"project/inspiring-young-readers-the-song-of-us/10139340/","projectTitle":"Inspiring Young Readers -“The Song of Us” by Kate Fussner","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Daniels","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp4914125_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1508785690756","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/emma-daniels"},{"teacherId":1595912,"projectId":10233998,"letterContent":"The Magic Belt and Alba series have made a tremendous difference for my students. As a reading specialist, I work with small groups of students who are learning the foundational skills needed to become successful readers. These books provide exactly the kind of practice they need while keeping them highly engaged.\r\n\r\nThe Magic Belt series introduces and reinforces essential phonics skills such as short vowels, two-syllable words, glued sounds, suffixes, consonant blends, and final -le syllables. The Alba series builds on these skills and expands to include vowel-consonant-e patterns and vowel teams. Because the books follow a carefully designed phonics sequence, I can align my lessons directly to the skills students encounter in the text. This allows students to immediately apply what they have learned in meaningful reading.\r\n\r\nReading in my classroom begins with a lesson that introduces, reviews, and practices specific phonics skills. Students then read a book that contains the skill we have been studying. During reading, students may read together or whisper-read independently while I listen, provide immediate corrective feedback, and model fluent reading. The books give students repeated opportunities to practice decoding while building confidence and comprehension.\r\n\r\nWhat has been most exciting is watching students become invested in the stories. The books feature exciting fantasy and science fiction adventures, striking illustrations, and plots that keep students eager to turn the page. My students constantly make predictions about what will happen next and are excited to discuss the characters and events.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, these are the first books they can truly read on their own. Instead of feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, they experience success. They see themselves as readers. That confidence carries over into other reading activities and motivates them to keep practicing.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this project possible. Your generosity has provided my students with engaging, skill-aligned books that help them develop the foundational reading skills they need while experiencing the joy and excitement of reading.","fullyFundedDate":1778598119883,"projectUrl":"project/help-my-students-read-books-they-can-act/10233998/","projectTitle":"Help My Students Read Books They Can Actually Read","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Arlington","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1595912_orig.jpg?crop=622,622,x0,y80&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1777394658806","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1595912"},{"teacherId":2887605,"projectId":9967924,"letterContent":"Thank you again for your generosity and support in helping fund our library couch project. Students in grades PreK–8 use it daily during independent reading time, partner reading activities. It truly brings our library community together in a special way.\r\n\r\nThe students were so excited when they first saw the new couch. Many immediately commented on how cozy and inviting the library felt, and several students asked if they could read there right away. It was wonderful to see how something as simple as comfortable seating made students even more eager to spend time reading.\r\n\r\nAs we continue building a positive reading culture in our school, the couch will play an important role in upcoming literacy activities and library projects. Students are currently exploring independent reading goals and book discussions, and having a comfortable, flexible space encourages them to stay engaged and excited about reading.
